Optim-Eyes™ Vision Support Formula was created based on the results of AREDS and AREDS2 eye studies by the National Institutes of Health. Opim-Eyes Vision Support contains a blend of ingredients known to help support the health of the eyes: Vitamin C, when taken as ascorbic acid, has been shown to reduce intra-ocular ("within the eye") pressure. Vitamin E Vitamin E improves blood flow to the macula and reduces free radical stress. Vitamin E is included as mixed tocopherols. Lutein & zeaxanthin are the two carotenoids found in the retina. High lutein levels are correlated with healthy maculas. Astaxanthin is also a carotenoid of the xanthophyll group. Unlike other carotenoids, it is not converted to Retinol (vitamin A), meaning that it stays available in its natural form. Beta carotene is a natural precursor to vitamin A, known to improve night vision. The anthocyanidins in bilberry decrease vascular permeability. Bilberry extracts have been used for over 50 years in France. Zinc deficiencies can contribute to increased Rapid Dark Adaptation Test values. With age, people become susceptible to zinc deficiencies, which can lead to poor night vision. Because zinc competes with copper for absorption, zinc may precipitate a copper deficiency when supplemented regularly. Therefore copper has been added to Optim-Eyes to prevent this. Ginkgo biloba has been demonstrated to increase circulation in peripheral arteries of the eyes. An extract standardized to 24% ginkgo flavonglycosides and 6% terpene lactones is used in this product, as this is the "gold standard" for ginkgo biloba.
