The bitter, acrid, and cooling root of the bupleurum plant, known in Chinese as 'kindling of the barbarians', has been traditionally used in teas, capsules, and extracts. It's a key component in the nine-herb formula sho saiko to, alongside licorice, ginseng, and ginger. Bupleurum root powder is rich in nutrients, providing fatty acids and trace minerals like calcium and potassium. It also contains rutin, a plant flavonoid composed of quercetin and rutinose, commonly found in multi-vitamin formulas.
