What the brand says
Importance of Folic Acid Since it has been established to play a central role in cell multiplication via DNA synthesis, and a deficiency has been linked with neural tube defects such as spina bifida, the standard recommendation is now at least 400 mcg per day for all women of child bearing age without waiting until pregnancy is recognized. Fetal neural defects can occur before a woman realizes that she is pregnant. Deficiencies of folic acid during pregnancy have also been linked to low birth weight. Importance of Iron Iron requirements increase during pregnancy, making iron deficiency in pregnancy quite common. Adequate iron is essential for the formation of healthy red blood cells, and for both fetal demands and the large increase in maternal blood volume. The regular recommended daily allowance for iron (for women aged 18-50 years) is 18 mg. However, expectant mothers need more iron and therefore are recommended to increase their iron intake to about 30 mg per day. Pregnant women should consult with their physician to determine optimal iron dosing. Importance of Vitamin A Vitamin A helps form and maintain healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes, and skin. Vitamin A also promotes good vision, especially in dim light. Excessive intake of vitamin A has been linked to cleft palate and other congenital defects. Recommended vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy is 5000 IUs since other sources are expected to contribute to the daily intake. Intake of food containing natural beta-carotene are preferred as the body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A only as needed and not in the amounts that may be toxic to the body.
